Yogyakarta – KLa Project

My all-time Indonesian favorite. Yogyakarta by KLa Project. The song was popular when I was in my high school… so it was back then 15 years ago. But it still sounds as new.

I can only find the live acoustic version on youtube. And though I like the original version better, this still sounds good. The group is no longer together now. Which is too bad. Well, people move on and life goes on!

The song is telling the story about a guy who went back to the city of Yogyakarta where he used to spend time with the girl that used to be in his life, who has now passed away. When he stepped into Yogyakarta, all the memories of the olden days came back again…

Pulang ke kotamu
Ada setangkup haru dalam rindu
Masih seperti dulu
Tiap sudut menyapaku bersahabat, penuh selaksa makna
Terhanyut aku akan nostalgi
Saat kita sering luangkan waktu
Nikmati bersama
Suasana Jogja

Di persimpangan langkahku terhenti
Ramai kaki lima
Menjajakan sajian khas berselera
Orang duduk bersila
Musisi jalanan mulai beraksi
Seiring laraku kehilanganmu
Merintih sendiri
Ditelan deru kotamu …

Walau kini kau t’lah tiada tak kembali
Namun kotamu hadirkan senyummu abadi
Ijinkanlah aku untuk s’lalu pulang lagi
Bila hati mulai sepi tanpa terobati

Returning to your city,
There is a handful of sadness mingled with longing
It was still like before
Every corner of the city is greeting me,
friendly, full of a thousand meanings…
I am swept away in memories
Of the days when we used to spend our times
Together enjoying
The air of Jogja…

At the crossroad, my steps are stopped
Street peddlers by the roadside
Selling their tasty food and merchandises
People sitting on the floors
Street buskers start to play their songs
As I am painfully missing you
Whimpering silently
Drowned by the noise of your city…

Though now you are no longer here
Your city brings back your sweet smiles again
Please let me always come back here
Whenever my heart starts to get lonely
and nothing else just won’t cure it…

Note: Yogyakarta is a city that is still very strong with Javanese culture. One of the typical attraction of the city is the street peddlers who sell local Jogja fare, i.e. nasi gudeg. They usually sell nasi gudeg in humble streetside stalls, with no chairs and tables around. So people who want to eat nasi gudeg will have to sit on the floors by the roadside. And usually, when you are eating your nasi gudeg, there will be street buskers walking around singing their songs, hoping you would give them some money in return for their so-called ‘entertainment’.

That is the air of Jogja.
