Another movie I finish is The Holiday. A feel-good romantic movie for hopeless romantics everywhere. For those of you who are alergic to romantic movies on the borderline of cheesy and corny, stay away… (a Ms. AcidicRain particularly comes to mind hehe… unless if love has somehow transformed you…
)
Well, since I am a hopeless romantic type, this movie sits down well with me. I am even thinking of buying the DVD. Whoever wrote the screenplay, or worked on the cinematography — I am guessing that they are also of the romantic breed. Beautiful views. Romantic and catchy lines (yes, yes,… cheesy as well).
Disclaimer: this is not a movie review. If you haven’t watched the movie you may not understand what I’m blabbering about.
The movie treats us to some visual beauty. Beautiful view of England’s countryside in winter time. Beautiful houses – Amanda’s big and modern house, Iris’ cottage in the countryside. Oh… and I think Miles’ place is cool.
A few cute, sweet, and sometimes corny moments that I remember…
Iris, if she is a song. Miles played the song he wrote about Iris and the melody is just soooo…. beautiful.
Arthur’s exercising to walk in the swimming pool. And he slipped. I think it was just cute!
Arthur’s holding Iris’ hands tightly when he walked into his tribute. That was a truly sweet moment…
Miles’ expression after Iris agreeing to new year’s eve date. Hehe… I think this one is corny. But then again, as Iris said in the movie, “I like corny. I’m looking for corny in my life.”
Another thing that came to mind is this. That one should not be in relationship just because 1) they are afraid of losing another, and 2) the person is the best so far in their lives and the others are just screwed up. Jasper wanted Iris simply because he couldn’t handle losing her. Yeah, while still keeping the other girl at the same time. Maggie wanted to get back to Miles because the other guy was ‘not like what she thought of’. That is simply wrong.
Be in relationship if you truly want to be together with her. If you truly love her and care about her.
At that moment my mind wanders around to the people around me. Ms. J was willing to give up her dreams for me. Give herself to me. Take care of me. Maybe it is true at the moment. But, knowing her, deep down inside I feel that she said all those things simply because she could not bear losing me. And I am sure that in the long run, it will not work. It will just result in bitterness and resentment.
Ms. PD is another case. She stepped into relationship with Mr. Banker after Mr. Diplomat dumped her. Simply because he was the best she could find so far. She didn’t love Mr. Banker as much as Mr. Diplomat, but hey… at least Mr. Banker stuck with her. And generous enough to buy her a car. Buy an apartment for them to live together. Set the wedding date and preparation. Only to be dumped by her for another guy. I only hope that the new guy would be someone she truly loves. Not just another guy who is ‘the best so far’.
Okay… okay… back to the movie. My mind wanders far enough…
The only thing about this movie that I have a bit of a problem with is… the casting of Cameron Diaz as Amanda. Cameron Diaz played Amanda in love well… but she was not believable as a woman who owns a succesful movie advertising company. Don’t you have to have the fire in the belly to be someone like that? The rest of the casting is nice though. Kate Winslet as Iris, Jake Black as Miles, and Jude Law as Graham. Kate Winslet is simply… excellent. Love her, love her, love her…
I love The Holiday. And boy… am I in need of one myself!
